Asylum Saturday

Asylum Saturday

05:00 Hotel facilities and Administration

The queue for the first panel (Jensen and Jared scheduled for 09:15) was already filling the corridor at 05:30.

We were let into the room without incident at 08:30, and the scheduled 09:00 start turned into 09:45. Despite the organisers saying it was fairest to use "first come, first served" for seats, several rows of seats at the front and side of the stage were already filled by staff and those who were let in the stage doors before everyone else who had been queueing at the back doors from 4am. There were a few videos shown to fill in the time until they started, over an hour late. The MC was actually quite good. They introduced all the guests on stage for people to take photos.

The hotel facilities were good, the staging was excellent, the room was huge, of course, but was geared up for all 1500 people to see, and the two screen system was good - the guests were in the middle with a large video screen either side, so not obscured by the people actually sitting in front of them. The screens had an instant computer link for messages to flash up, informing people of the other events, eg when new photo ops started and the coffee lounge and autograph sessions were running. However, they didn't always use them so some people missed events like the coffee lounges, because of the confusion of the timings being an hour out in some cases but not others. The sound was also excellent throughout the room, except for at the exact point of the questioners' microphones (presumably to avoid feedback). For photos, it was not so good, because the stage was very brightly lit with spotlights pointing from the microphones and the rest of the room was almost cinema-level of darkness so automatic cameras didn't work very well.

The MC introduced all the guest on stage, and they filed on with Jensen and Jared coming on last, and the rest then leaving the stage.

Also on Saturday, I had a Jensen photo-op, which was quite well-organised and the call was flashed up on the screen for the relevant numbers, 150 at a time (divided into 4 sets), so this surprisingly took less than an hour of queuing, and I only missed parts of two stage talks. Fortunately, and entirely accidentally, I did get him to laugh so I really like the picture. Getting it signed afterwards did require another three hours of queuing, though.
